RACING STORY: Of cut jeans and T-shirts
WRITTEN BY: Kenneth TAN

When I was racer wannbe , didn't know that a cyclist needed to train let alone needed to put on the proper attire.

All I thought was everyone just show up at a race and go round and round??Also those tight clothing and "ah piang" black pants looks funny ,sure as hell won't see me wearing them!So I thought.................................heh!heh!

Red , green , blue you could name them all and I still won't wear the jerseys .It all seems too funky to me thoes cycling togs.

Zipper in the middle of a shirt ?? I thought a zipper was for closing up your fly so nobody would see the part of your anatomy that was suppose to be private.

Three pockets on the back???what the hell were thay thinking when they designed these jerseys?!!Did someone fall asleep here?

Those tight pants looks embarrassing to put on , I mean I look like some Robin Hood in black trying to rob the rich and give to the poor! I bet the poor probably run off after I show myself in those tight ass hugging pants!!

So I use to go riding in my "cutter Dennis Quaid" style wear , cut heavy denim "Wrangler" jeans and a sportsday Tee from my school with the sleeves cut off!To me this is the coolest way to go ...........cycling that is.

It was O.K. if you gonna ride around town checking out bikes shop and staring at girls all day and at the same time trying to look like John Travolta in Urban Cwboy...??!!

I mean Rudys and Oakelys were not well know then in the cycling market either , Rudy himself was probably was still selling motocycle forks and shoes and the guys at Oakelys were probably still hawking ski goggles!

Then came the serious part of cycling for me , I went for my first training ride with a serious group of cyclist and found out the hard way why the clothing were cut the way they suppose to be cut.So after much anguish and blisters to my anatamy that was reserve for my future wife............... I found those reasons out the hard way.

Jerseys are meant to be tight so your clothing doesn't flap around like leaves on a rain tree when you riding at 45km/h !as for the bright colours well .............they're just bright coz ........................???????????I don't really know?

The zipper is where it is because when on the flats ,you can have them all the way down so you can breathe better and when you desend you zipp them up all the way so you can keep out the cold wind....................sort of like wearing turtle neck in the cold and open neck in the heat.............or should be vice versa ,your fashion call , thats what the zipper is for..............let you choose your style?maybe ?can't say much here.

Alas the perenial black tight ass hugging shorts , after riding for 120km in cut jeans you begin to realize that there seems to be a lot of air being blow into the openings of the cut away legs of the denim jeans! I must admit it was not very comfortable with some much air inside your holiest of the holiest!

Makes it worst when some road grit and sand get channeled in as well and not forgetting your sweat too!......all of a sudden you have a cement mixer effect happening "Live" between your legs each time your pedal goes round!!! Not a very nice feeling I can assure anyone.

So lesson learnt that day was that denim jeans are meant to be worn un-cut unless you want to look like the girl from "Dukes of Hazzard" and the tight clothing is suppose to be tight for a reason and underwear , be it any form from lose boxers to stringy ass flossers..............................Isn't part of a cycling attire !
